I was looking at an American guide book to Brazil recently and felt great sympathy with the writer when he tried to describe São Paulo. It was obvious that he had been so horrified by the sheer size and apparent chaos of the city that he had ditched all the flowery verbiage which marked the rest of the guide and did little more than list some hotels and restaurants.
He made it clear that the section on São Paulo was for the unfortunate business traveler and not for the sensible tourist who would not go near the place. You could almost sense the relief as he got onto the next chapter.

Populism reflects the rhetorical style of political leaders who claim to govern directly for the people. In the context of Latin America, populism can therefore be used to describe "mass-popular movements... based on an emotive call... and often organized around a single charismatic leader". As the political theorist Carlos Alberto Montaner puts it:
Populism is an ideological trend and a form of governance that amalgamates all the errors and political vices blithely practiced by Latin Americans throughout the 20th century: strong-man rule, patronage, statism, collectivism and anti-Americanism."

O vice-presidente José Alencar, que se recupera de cirurgia para retirada de tumores da região abdominal realizada no último dia 25, segue internado no Hospital Sírio-Libanês, em São Paulo, e seu estado geral é de "boa evolução", segundo boletim médico do hospital divulgado nesta terça-feira.

| Lula e ministros enviam mensagem a José Alencar |
|

O presidente Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva e os ministros mandaram uma mensagem ao vice José Alencar desenjando seu pronto restabelecimento. Por sugestão do ministro da Advocacia Geral da União (AGU), José Antônio Toffoli, a mensagem foi redigida durante a reunião ministerial, na segunda-feira, na Granja do Torto. Na mensagem, os ministros e Lula desejam que Alencar volte logo ao Palácio do Planalto. O vice, de 77 anos, se submeteu a uma cirurgia para retirada de tumores na região abdominal e está internado há 12 dias no Hospital Sírio-Libanês, em São Paulo.

In January 1984, there was a process of re-ascension of mass movements in Brazil. The working class was reorganizing, accumulating organic forces. Underground parties, such as the Brazilian Communist Party (PCB), the Communist Party of Brazil, etc., were in the streets. We had achieved a partial amnesty, but the majority of the exiles had returned.
The Worker's Party (PT), the Central Workers' Union (CUT) were taking shape, as well as the National Congress of the Working Class (CONCLAT) promoted by the communists, which later merged into the CUT.

| Dossiê: Aparecido é indiciado pela PF por quebra de sigilo funcional |

O delegado da Polícia Federal Sérgio Menezes indiciou o ex-secretário de Controle Interno da Casa Civil José Aparecido Pires Nunes por quebra de sigilo funcional. Ele foi enquadrado no artigo 325, parágrafo segundo, do Código Penal. O artigo prevê de 2 a 6 anos de prisão para servidor público que divulga informações protegidas por sigilo.
Aparecido é apontado como principal suspeito do vazamento do dossiê com gastos do ex-presidente Fernando Henrique Cardoso. Ele teria enviado o dossiê para André Fernandes, assessor do senador Alvaro Dias (PSDB-PR), o que acabou por tornar público o material.

| Oito pessoas são resgatadas de escombros na China |

As equipes de salvamento resgataram nesta sexta-feira, 16, com vida oito pessoas, entre elas quatro crianças, que estavam soterradas nos escombros no distrito de Beichuan, um dos mais afetados pelo terremoto da segunda-feira na província de Sichuan (sudoeste da China), segundo a imprensa estadual. Entre os resgatados estão três alunos de uma escola primária da cidade de Beichuan, sede do distrito do mesmo nome, segundo a agência de notícias Chinanews.

Eyeing Arab clients Marriott Brazil chain is offering in its luxury hotels exclusive services to Muslims. The differentiated services are provided in the JW Marriott, in Rio de Janeiro, and at Renaissance, in São Paulo, said the account manager at the hotel in Rio de Janeiro, Rodrigo Canto.
According to him, on making the reservation, the guest may identify himself as Muslim and ask for the services. They include items like an arrow and a compass showing the direction of Mecca so that the faithful may guide his movements at prayer time, the availability of a copy of the Koran, the offering of teas and of machinery to prepare the drink, largely consumed by the Arabs, and, in case the client requires, the removal of all alcoholic beverages from the fridge in the room.

| Bank of Brazil Grows 93%, Posts US$ 1.3 Billion First Quarter Net Profit |

Banco do Brasil (Bank of Brazil) posted net profit of 2.3 billion reais (US$ 1.3 billion) in the first quarter of 2008. According to a report disclosed this Wednesday, May 14, by the institution, the result is 66.6% higher than recorded in the same period of 2007. Compared with the fourth quarter of 2007, there was an expansion of 92.9%.
According to the bank, not taking extraordinary effects into account, profit during the period totaled 1.559 billion reais (US$ 940 million), a result 6.3% greater than recorded in the same period of last year and 20.9% higher than recorded in the fourth quarter of 2007. Extraordinary effects include the result obtained from the sale of a share of Visa International (US$ 183.9 million).
