| Brazilian Seeks Foreign Partner for His Organic Hibiscus Goodies |
|
It took four years of research on hibiscus flowers, a plant of African and Asian origin well adapted to Brazil, before businessman Fernando Gama established Flor dos Hibiscus (Hibiscus Flower), a brand that produces and sells organic food like jelly, chutneys, spreads, chilli sauces and seasoning based on the plant that is rich in vitamins and minerals.
The products have organic certification and are traded in Minas Gerais and São Paulo. In 2007, some samples were shipped to importers in Germany and Sweden. Now Gama, who hails from the southeastern Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, is seeking an investor for expansion of production and to enter the foreign market.

| Marijuana Marchers Stopped and Arrested in Brazil |
|
A series of judicial decisions prevented Brazilians from marching for the legalization of marijuana in nine capitals of Brazil's states. The marches were scheduled to take place on May 4, 2008 in ten different cities, but state courts issued preliminary injunctions prohibiting the marches in nine of them.
The judges' actions have been condemned by several organizations including the London-based freedom of expression group Article 19, which said it was appalled by the detention of around 20 demonstrators who attended the marches.

| Brazil's Lula Loves Investment Grade - Whatever That Is |
|
Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is having the time of his life at the moment. Barely a day goes by when he does not pop up in some part of the country like a latter-day Harold MacMillan telling everyone that they have never had it so good.
He gives the same old speech - no more hunger, booming economy, falling unemployment, new jobs - occasionally throwing an extra ingredient in - damning the "elite" which can't stand the idea of a son of the soil like him being President or highlighting the virtues of his right-hand woman, Dilma Rousseff, the "mother" of the Accelerated Growth program which is apparently going to resolve all the outstanding problems facing Brazil.

| These Brazilian Students Need a Bigger Say Over Their Education |
|
It is a shame that, after 23 years of direct elections of the rector and after the election of five rectors (one of them reelected) by the university community, the University of Brasília (UnB) must once again undergo a period with a rector pro tempore appointed by the Minister of Education.
The University Counsel, it is true, was consulted and Roberto Aguiar was indisputably a wise choice. He is a jurist and a humanist with vast experience in education and in negotiating.

| No Law Will Make the Brazilian Judiciary Abide by the Laws |
|
Since it was enacted in October 1988, the Brazilian Constitution has developed judicial independence and offered to the population a broader access to the courts. Over these last two decades, however, the level of distrust in the Brazilian judiciary has paradoxically increased, and judges have been constantly involved in practices of corruption.
As evidence of this, in 1999, an opinion poll conducted by Garibaldi-Fernandez revealed that 74 percent of Brazilians disagreed with the opinion that judges normally punish the guilty and let the innocent go free. Moreover, no less than 86 percent said that some people, particularly judges and politicians, are never adequately punished for breaking the law.
