Steady population growth means there are about 70 million new mouths to feed every year, and increasing affluence is also spurring more people to buy more meat. Meat is grain-intensive - it takes about seven pounds of grain to produce one pound of beef.

There has probably never been a better time for a worker to find a good job in Brazil than at the moment. The economy is growing, shrugging off most of the fallout from the crisis in the United States, consumers are buying as if every week was Christmas, real pay is rising and millions have been moving up the social ladder into higher classes.
Unemployment is virtually at a record low and jobs are plentiful. Social inequality and misery are still around, but millions have been taken out of poverty or given a helping hand thanks to the economic boom and government social security programs. How much credit should President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva take for this situation? Quite a lot, but the truth is that Lula has had a lot of lucky breaks and he knows it.

In these weeks leading up to the 120th anniversary of the Abolition of Slavery in Brazil, I have spent some time reading the Chamber of Deputies' and the Federal Senate's records from the sessions in which the Congress was debating and approving the Lei Áurea, the law that banned slavery.
I read, among other things, the speeches of Joaquim Nabuco in favor of passage and those of the Baron of Cotegipe in opposition. Those were the years of the great debates about consolidating Abolition and the Republic.

| There's No Business Like Oil Business - in Brazil Anyway |

Oil has seldom been far from the headlines in Brazil since the state-owned petroleum giant, Petrobras, announced at the end of last year that it had discovered large new offshore reserves of oil and gas. Should these reserves be recoverable then Brazil is set to become not only an oil exporter but one of the world's biggest producers.
The news was hailed by investors and share prices in Petrobras rose sharply. However, a comment by the head of the National Petroleum Agency (ANP), Haroldo Lima, on April 14 suggesting that there were further deposits of oil which could be five times greater raised the stakes even higher and pushed up the share price of Petrobras and other associated companies not only in Brazil but all over the world.

Vor der brasilianischen Küste könnte das drittgrößte Ölvorkommen der Welt mit 33 Milliarden Barrel Rohöl lagern. Diese Zahl hatte der Leiter der nationalen Ölaufsichtsbehörde, Haroldo Lima, nach Angaben seines Sprechers gegenüber Journalisten genannt. Der staatliche Ölkonzern Petrobras verwies am Dienstag allerdings auf laufende Untersuchungen, die vorerst keine offizielle Bestätigung ermöglichten.

The dengue fever epidemic currently affecting several Brazilian cities, especially Rio de Janeiro, is frightening all of Brazil. While the authorities are exchanging accusations and arguing over whom to blame, few people remember those who predicted this epidemic.
Many were the doctors, epidemiologists and politicians who issued warnings, called for action, and denounced the fact that Brazil, and especially Rio, was headed for the epidemic that we are witnessing today.

| Brazil Is Bridging the Gap Between the Rich and the Poorest |

Brazil's economy has grown, on average, 4.5% over the last for years. Per capita income has grown 3.05%, exports rose around 22%, inflation has remained under control, 3.9% last year, the benchmark interest rate has fallen from 16.5% to 11.25%. These figures have reached the foreign market, bringing further investment and a better image for Brazil among rating agencies.
But the fruits of these rosy numbers have also come to a place that is far from the financial market: the homes of the poorest Brazilians. The improvement of the economy helped reduce the social inequality, say specialists.

A repressão chinesa contra as manifestações promovidas por monges em Lhasa é parte e uma longa tradição de controle estatal dos mosteiros budistas no Tibete, como mostra a série "Um ano no Tibete", produzida pelo canal britânico BBC 4.
Como estão entre as poucas instituições chinesas com potencial para organizar a oposição ao governo, os mosteiros budistas são motivo de preocupação para o Partido Comunista Chinês.

| Departamento de Estado dos EUA investiga violação de dados |

O Departamento de Estado americano abriu nesta sexta-feira uma investigação sobre repetidas violações de arquivos com dados dos passaportes dos três candidatos à Casa Branca --o republicano John McCain e os pré-candidatos democratas Barack Obama e Hillary Clinton.
O Departamento de Justiça irá monitorar o desenrolar da investigação. Uma investigação paralela será realizada pelo Comitê de Assuntos Externos da Câmara dos Representantes.

| Joint FBI-Brazil Effort Breaks Up US$ 50 Million Securities Fraud Gang |

A US federal grand jury in Miami returned this Thursday, March 20, a 16-count indictment charging Brazilians Rodrigo Molina, 32, of Miami, and Marcos Macchione, 31, of Aventura, in Florida state, for their alleged involvement as money laundering service providers for a sophisticated international securities fraud organization.
The action against the two Brazilian nationals was announced by assistant Attorney General Alice S. Fisher of the Criminal Division and U.S. Attorney R. Alexander Acosta of the Southern District of Florida.
