| Black Wednesday Knocks Brazil Markets Down 5% |
|
It was Brazil stock market's second worst day this year. Battered by a widespread slump in the global prices of commodities, Bovespa, the São Paulo stock exchange, this Wednesday, March 19, plummeted 5.01%, closing at 58,827 points with 6.8 billion reais (US$ 3.97) traded.
Oil, for example, fell almost 6% in New York, closing at US$ 104.48 a barrel, a 4.72% decline. And among the most beat up companies in Brazil were giants Petrobras, the state-controlled oil multinational and the mining firm Vale.

| Families of Brazilians Killed in Air Crash Want American Pilots Back in Brazil |
|
The Association of Relatives and Friends of Gol's flight 1907, which fell down in the Amazon jungle killing all those aboard, issued a statement condemning a Brazilian judged decision to allow two American pilots, Joseph Lepore and Jan Paladino, to be heard in the United States instead of having to travel to Brazil for the deposition.
The association's document reads: "The ruling issued by Judge Murilo Mendes, responsible for the criminal process related to the accident that took place between Gol's Boeing 737 and ExcelAire's Legacy jet on September 29, 2006, caused concern among the members of The Association of Relatives and Friends of Gol's flight 1907 Victims."

| Brazil Top 10 in Entrepreneurship. 13% of Brazilians Have Own Business |

In 2007, Brazil has come closer to the main countries in entrepreneurship in the world, rising from the 10th to the 9th position. This is shown in a new study by the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), which measures the rates of global entrepreneurship.
The total entrepreneurial activity index (TEA) in the country grew from the 11.6% registered in 2006 to 12.72% in 2007, the equivalent to 15 million enterprises. The figures in the study were disclosed Wednesday, March 19, by the Brazilian Institute of Quality and Productivity (IBQP), at the offices of the Institute of Capital Markets (Ibmec), in São Paulo.

| Jobs in Brazil's Civil Construction Grow 400% |
|
Civil construction was the sector of the Brazilian economy that recorded the highest increase in job positions, in February, in comparison with the same period last year. The expansion rate was almost 400%.
In February 2007, 5,522 new positions were created in the sector, whereas in February 2008, the volume grew to 27,574. The data were culled from the General Records Office for Employment and Unemployment (Caged), which was disclosed yesterday (18) by the Brazilian Ministry of Labour.

| Brasil deve ter 27 mil novos casos de câncer de intestino este ano |
|
O número de novos casos de câncer de intestino estimados para o Brasil neste ano é de 12,4 mil em homens e 14,5 mil em mulheres. Também conhecido como neoplasia colorretal (de cólo e reto), em ambos os esxos, a doença é o terceiro tipo de câncer mais comum no mundo (os primeiros são mama e próstata). Ontem, no dia de combate à patologia, foram prestadas informações à população sobre diagnóstico, prevenção, sintomas e tratamentos da doença. Em Salvador, os estandes foram montados, na Praia de Jardim de Alá. A iniciativa também foi realizada nas cidades de São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro e Curitiba.

| Brazil Gets US$ 1 Billion from Inter-American Bank to Develop Tourism |
|
The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) is lending Brazilian states and municipalities US$ 1 billion to be used for financing tourism. The credit line is the result of an agreement between the bank and Brazil's federal government through its Tourism ministry.
The accord was signed last week, in the Brazilian capital Brasília, by the minister of Tourism, Marta Suplicy, and the IDB representative in Brazil, José Luis Lupo, and is part of the Tourism Development Program (Prodetur Nacional).

| The Brazilian Bloody War Against US Monsanto and Swiss Syngenta |

On March 7 - International Women's Day - dozens of Brazilian women occupied a research site of the U.S.-based agricultural biotechnology giant Monsanto in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, destroying the greenhouse and experimental plots of genetically-modified (GM) corn.
Participants, members of the international farmers' organization La Vía Campesina, stated in a note that the act was to protest the Brazilian government's decision in February to legalize Monsanto's GM Guardian corn, just weeks after the French government prohibited the corn due to environment and human health risks.

| Brasil/MEC vai investigar curso de direito que aprovou menino |
|
O ministro Fernando Haddad (Educação) afirmou ontem que vai investigar o processo seletivo da Unip (Universidade Paulista) em Goiânia, depois que um menino de 8 anos foi aprovado no vestibular da instituição. Haddad classificou como “preocupante” a aprovação do garoto, segundo informações repassadas pela assessoria de imprensa do ministério. “Li a notícia com muita preocupação. Vamos requisitar o material do vestibular para verificar se os critérios são compatíveis com a excelência de ensino”, disse.
