| Oposição pressiona e cobra redução de MPs para votar reforma |

O PSDB e o Democratas (DEM) cobraram do ministro da Fazenda, Guido Mantega, a redução do envio ao Congresso Nacional de Medidas Provisórias (MPs) para votar a proposta de reforma tributária. Segundo o presidente do DEM, deputado Rodrigo Maia (RJ), o excesso de MPs é grave e inviabiliza o trabalho do Congresso.

| Spiderman beim Klettern in Rio festgenommen |

Der französische Fassadenkletterer Alain Robert ist beim Erklimmen eines 150 Meter hohen Wolkenkratzers in Sao Paolo festgenommen worden.
Kurz bevor er die Spitze des Italia-Gebäudes im Stadtzentrum erreichte, fingen Wachleute "Spiderman" Robert am Sonntagabend ab, teilte die Polizei am Montag mit.
Zum Abbruch gezwungen
Die Wächter hätten den 36-jährigen bei den Füßen gepackt und ihn zum Abbruch seiner Aktion gezwungen. Robert kam laut Polizei nach kurzer Vernehmung wieder frei. Er sei "frustriert" gewesen, es nicht bis ganz nach oben geschafft zu haben, und wolle es nochmals versuchen - dieses Mal aber mit der Erlaubnis der Behörden.

The holidays around here end in Ash Wednesday, a date annually selected from a given week of February or March by the Catholic Church, to mark the beginning of Lent - a period of forty days for all Christians to repent and for most to cure their hangover.

| Let Brazilians Sort Out the Problems of the Amazon |

The destruction of the Amazon forest is a subject dear to the heart of the foreign media and environmental organizations but of virtually no interest to the majority of Brazilians. The foreigners seem to think that by causing a fuss every time the statistics on the latest deforestation are published they will save this vast area.
I believe they are wrong and should change their tactics or look around for another cause to adopt. The Amazon region is doomed and will end up as barren and bleak as my native Scottish Highlands where the original forest was chopped down centuries ago. Foreigners tend to see the Amazon problem the way George Bush saw Iraq i.e. a situation in which the good guys should take over from the bad guys and educate the locals over the errors of their ways.

| Total ban on Brazil beef as EU's patience runs out |

A TOTAL ban on imports of beef from Brazil is set to be imposed by the EU in mid-March, after Brazil tried to push the boundaries of strict limits that came into effect last Thursday.
Last week's extensive import ban was a result of concerns about controls on foot-and-mouth disease and traceability of cattle in Brazil. Last year Brazil exported about 280,000 tonnes of beef to the EU of which more than 20,000 tonnes was landed in the UK.
