| Rio de Janeiro - Karneval mit 700.000 Touristen und 9.000 Polizisten |

Die brasilianische Metropole Rio de Janeiro erwartet zum diesjährigen Karneval mehr als 700.000 Touristen, davon etwa ein Drittel Ausländer. Wie die Sicherheitsbehörde des Bundesstaates Rio de Janeiro am Dienstag mitteilte, sollen 9.000 Polizisten während des am Freitag beginnenden Straßenfestes für Ordnung sorgen, fünf Prozent mehr als im vergangenen Jahr.

| São Paulo registra dia mais chuvoso do ano |
|
A chuva que atinge São Paulo desde a madrugada tornou o dia de hoje o de maior precipitação do ano. Até o começo da tarde, o índice pluviométrico médio registrado pelo Centro de Gerenciamento de Emergências (CGE) em toda a cidade era de 38,8 milímetros - cada milímetro corresponde a um litro de água em um metro quadrado, superando o dia 21, em que choveu 26,3 milímetros.

| Comissão de Ética pede que CGU investigue gastos de Matilde |
|
A Comissão de Ética Pública da Presidência da República decidiu pedir que a Controladoria Geral da União (CGU) investigue a ministra da Igualdade Racial, Matilde Ribeiro. A ministra gastou R$ 171 mil com cartões corporativos no ano passado. Entre as despesas pagas estão contas de restaurantes e de freeshops. Os integrantes do colegiado querem que a CGU diga se houve algum crime envolvido no caso ou se o problema trata-se apenas de uma questão ética. Apenas depois do parecer da CGU que a Comissão vai tomar uma decisão.

| Brazil's Politicians Set to Cash in on Oil and Gas Discoveries |

As if Brazil was not blessed with a bounty of natural resources it seems that God has decided to help his favorite nation once again by unveiling his latest gifts - massive reserves of oil and gas. The state-owned oil company Petrobras announced on January 21 that it had discovered huge offshore gas reserves which could be as large as the oil resources it discovered in November at the nearby Tupi field, which are estimated at five to eight billion barrels.

São Paulo - Brasilianische Zwillingschwestern haben vor Gericht das Recht erstritten, gemeinsam an einer renommierten Universität studieren zu dürfen - obwohl nur einer der beiden die Aufnahme geglückt war. Wie die Zeitung "O Estado de São Paulo" berichtete, hatte der Vater von Susy und Sandy de Sousa Dutra geklagt, um die "Einheit der Familie zu wahren".

In 2006 Lula created a stir by announcing that he is not a "socialist" but a "social democrat." He attributed this to his maturity, stating that "things evolve in proportion to the number of white hairs and the responsibilities that one has," and that "if you meet someone very old who is still a leftist, he must have problems."
Actually, Lula never claimed to be a socialist even when he was a youth, and as president he has followed the social democratic model established by his predecessor.

The climate is favorable, the soil is rich and the herbs and spices harvesting experiences in Brazil have been successful. Despite these factors, agronomist engineer Cirino Corrêa Júnior says the country still imports more medicinal, aromatic and condiment plants than it exports.
He is one of the authors of the most thorough research done in Brazil on the subject, the "Study of the Agro industrial of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Complex of the Paraná State-Diagnostics and Perspectives."

Vor einem Lokal in Sao Paulo sind am Donnerstagmorgen (Ortszeit) sechs Männer und eine Frau erschossen worden. Bei dem Gemetzel in der brasilianischen Wirtschaftsmetropole seien ferner zwei Männer schwer verletzt worden, berichteten Medien unter Berufung auf die örtliche Polizei.
