| This Brazilian Chap, a Real Estate Titan, Is Still a Live Wire at Age 74 |
|
When he was twenty-odd years old and was in the third year of engineering at São Paulo's Mackenzie school, Romeu Chap Chap decided he wanted to visit the United States. As he had no money for the trip, he developed a plan: He would send letters to 600 North American companies asking them to cover the cost of a two-day stay and transport between two cities.
The proposal included a group of five students and a professor. Sixty companies answered agreeing with the proposal.

| Flipping Places: Japanese in Brazil and Brazilians in Japan |
|
It is winter 2006. It is dusk. The snow is piled a foot high on the ground. I trudge awkwardly through it in my galoshes, a commodity I had until recently known only through stories - I being from the warmer climate of Marietta, Georgia. Most the shops are closed or are closing. A few shop owners bow casually and mutter "konbanwa" as I pass - a tactic for soliciting a final sale before dusk. I am hungry; I am looking for dinner.

| Brazil's Human Scavengers Finally Get a Break |
|
For the fifth successive Christmas, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva visited an association of rubbish collectors, many of whom live in the streets. If you walk or drive around Brazil's larger cities you will be familiar with these "catadores," as they are known, filling plastic bags or pulling rickety wooden carts packed with rubbish, mainly paper and scrap metal
There are reckoned to be around 300,000 of these human scavengers nationwide. There is nothing new about poor people combing through rubbish in search of something they can salvage but, as society is starting to realize the importance of recycling, they are now beginning to gain a higher status.

| There Are Seven Types of Peace. Brazil Needs to Make Each One of Them |
|
The Aymara people, who for centuries have lived around Lake Titicaca in the Andes, defend the principle of seven different types of peace. The first is inner peace. Peace with yourself through the health of your body, the clarity of your mind, the pleasure of your work, the reciprocity of your loves. Without peace with yourself, you are not at peace.
The second is directed upward. Peace with the spirits of your ancestors, with the will of God. If you are not at peace with the supernatural, spiritual world, with the metaphysics of your existence, your peace is incomplete.
